On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant changed the image of Japan overnight.  News reports of radiation leaks brought alarm around the world as Japanese citizens in Tokyo for the most part maintained their composure.
